Dakota Booster GENERAL Membership Meeting

April 20, 2009

Meeting called to order at 7:06 p.m.

Minutes from March General Membership Meeting were approved by Becky Wiitanen (1st) and Sue Heinz (2nd).  

Guest Speaker:

Stephanie Lange discussed the following flyers she distributed:

  1. ·1An update from Coalition for Youth and Family.   

  2. ·2Hydrocodin (vicodin) abuse among students. 

  3. ·3Teenage brain sneak peak. 

  4. ·4“Time to Talk”—how to talk to your child about your past with teachable moments. 

Donna Kirchhoff is taking a group of students to Lansing next week to attend a luncheon where they will receive an award for participating in an Alcohol Retailer Project, which is a model program for the rest of the state, and reminds retailers not to sell alcohol to minors.

Student Report:

  1. ·5A Junior parent information meeting is April 22 at 6:30 in the Auditorium. 

  2. ·6Applications are available in the Guidance Office for $500 scholarships to Seniors who are members of an ethnic minority group planning to pursue a degree.  

  3. ·7The first annual Mr. Dakota Pageant is Thursday at 7 p.m.  Tickets will be sold for $5 at all lunches or $7 at the door. 

  4. ·8Prom tickets go on sale tomorrow for $50 per ticket. 

  5. ·9Student Government elections are coming up.  Election packets are available for class officer positions outside the Student Activities Office this week. 

  6. ·10Dom thanked the booster board, administration, and parents for their support and wished good luck to his replacement, Kelsi. 

 

Administration Report:

  1. ·11The following report was provided by Mr. Briningstool: 

  2. ·12Les Miserable was the finest high school production ever seen. 

  3. ·13Student Leadership Conference was held at the end of March-beginning of May.  Student leaders attended to share ideas and discuss student issues.  Dakota was one of nine schools to receive the Star Award. 

  4. ·14Local scholarship applications will be accepted in the Main or Guidance Offices until next Monday. 

  5. ·15Senior Honors Night and scholarship recognition is May 21.  

  6. ·16Prom is May 8.  Positive feedback has been received from video ad on website. 

  7. ·17Majority of the cameras are operational.  Because of legal issues, parents will not be allowed to view camera recordings. 

  8. ·18Dress for Success campaign for spring attire is being promoted.  Dress code is the same as in the past.  Measurements are easy for self-check by students (fingertips, i.d. cards, etc.) 

  9. ·19Mr. Heethuis added the following information: 

  10. ·20The last Coffee with the Principal is May 5 at 12:30 in the Community Room. 

  11. ·21Senior Parent Meeting is April 21. 

  12. ·22Addressed the 10-year anniversary of the Columbine school shooting and noted that students are now more helpful and willing to talk to administration. 

  13. ·23The following questions/concerns from parents were discussed: 

  14. ·24Drug-detecting dogs will be back again after the weather breaks to sweep the parking lot.  The dogs went through CVHS before spring break, and their results were similar to ours. 

 

Service Report:

  1. ·25The Science Olympiad Team competed at Macomb County Regionals on Saturday, March 21.  They received medals in 14 out of 23 events, placing 1st in three events and 2nd in five events.  Overall, the team came in 3rd place out of 22 high schools that competed.  They will now compete in state competition on May 2 at Michigan State University. 

  2. ·26The Quiz Bowl Team finished 7th place out of 22 teams.  They won the 2nd tier of the tournament, which qualifies them to compete in the state tournament on April 24 in East Lansing. 

  3. ·27The Ecology Club, along with the environmental classes, will be cleaning up the school grounds on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22.  On May 1, some of the clubs are planning to each choose an entrance or doorway and beautify it with painted rocks, flags, or shrubs. 

 

Fine Arts Report:

  1. ·28Band – MSBOA District XVI Honors Band was March 21 and 24 at Avondale HS; State Solo & Ensemble was March 28 at Port Huron North HS; the Pit Orchestra performed during Les Miserables performances on March 26-28; Marching Band Information Meeting was April 6.  Upcoming events are:  Band All Night Party May 15; Spring Concert May 19; Band Banquet at Sycamore Hills May 28; and Graduation Ceremony June 7.  Additional information can be found on the band’s website:  www.dakotabands.com. 

  2. ·29Choir – Les Miserables performances were March 26-28 and State Solo & Ensemble was April 1- 2 in Flint.  Upcoming events are:  State Choral Festival at Rochester HS April 28 and 29; All State Honors Choir at WMU May 7-9; Spring Concert May 14; Choir Awards Banquet at Sycamore Hills May 20; and Graduation Ceremony June 7.  Additional information can be found on the choir’s website:  www.dakotachoir.com. 

  3. ·30Winter Guard – Competed at CVHS on March 21 and State Finals at Saginaw Valley State University on March 28, which ends their 2009 season.  Additional information can be found on the band’s website:  www.dakotabands.com.

Sports Report:

  1. ·32Grossed $1,066 from concession sales at track invitational last Friday. 

  2. ·33Physical Night is May 7 from 6:30-8:30 in the Gym.  The cost is $20. 

  3. ·34Congratulations to Dakota Boys Basketball and Dakota Girls Basketball, who both won District Championships. 

  4. ·35Congratulations to Head Varsity Cheer Coach, Michelle Worthy, voted White Division Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year. 

  5. ·36Congratulations to the following 2009 Dakota Ice Hockey members: 

  6. ·37Mr. MAC Hockey:  Steve Seaman 

  7. ·38MAC Red Division MVP:  Steve Seaman. 

  8. ·39MAC Red Coach of the Year:  Mr. Dave Koons. 

  9. ·40MAC Red All Conference:  Steve Seaman, Kyle Kolb, Alex Johanson, and Jeff Monfils. 

  10. ·41No sports training will be held July 4-12. 

  11. ·42Congratulations to Mike Wranosky, who placed 5th at the State Wrestling Meet at the Palace.  He is the first Dakota wrestler to place at state finals. 

  12. ·43Football Golf Outing on May 31 at Sycamore Hills. 

  13. ·44JV and Varsity Girls Tennis are both 4 - 0. 

  14. ·452009 Sideline Cheer Team Tumbling Clinics are April 29, May 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 3:30-6:00 for a cost of $15.  Open Skills Clinic is 5:00-6:00 at no cost.  Open Gym is not mandatory.  Freshmen Orientation is Tuesday, May 5, at Dakota.  Pre Tryout Parent Meeting is Wednesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m.  Cheer Tryouts are June 1-5.  Cheer Team Parent Meeting is June 9. 

  15. ·46Upcoming athletic camps:  11th Annual Football Camp; 3rd-5th Grade Volleyball Clinics; Speed/Weight/Agility Training; Middle School Volleyball Clinics; Youth Softball Clinic; Girls Basketball Youth Summer Camp. 

 

Craft Show Report:  

So far, 54 crafters have been booked, which is double the amount from this time last year.

The web site page cannot be accessed at this time; will check into web site renewal fee.

 

Donation Requests:

  1. ·47The following donation request under $500 was approved by board members at their meeting on April 6: 

  2. ·48Band requested $421.88 to purchase two sun shades for marching band camp. 

  3. ·49The following donation requests were approved by General Membership: 

  4. ·50Boys Tennis requested $4,178.00 to purchase windscreens for the tennis courts. 

  5. ·51Track and Field requested $7,000 to purchase 125 warm up suits. 

  6. ·52Some parents expressed concern that the tennis court windscreens will block vision of spectators.  Diane Lowe explained that the windscreens will only be placed on three sides of the tennis court, not on the side facing the houses, and both tennis coaches will work together on placement.  Concern was also expressed regarding the condition of the tennis courts.  Even though they were resurfaced 2 years ago, there are many cracks that need resurfacing again.  Mr. Briningstool will discuss this issue with Mr. Fusco. 

 

CAC Report:

Mary Ann Couto, our CAC representative, provided the following report from the CAC meeting she attended:

  1. ·53Next year’s budget will be presented by Mark Deldin on cable TV. 

 

Old Business:

A ballot was distributed for booster board nominations.  Mary Ann Couto volunteered to contact nominees.

 

New Business:  

On May 30, boosters will sponsor a computer and TV collection event in the East Parking Lot.  Any household electronics will be accepted at no cost.  A small fee will be charged to businesses and computer hard drives can be erased in the Atrium.  Information will be distributed to middle and elementary schools and flyers will be placed around the school.
