Dakota Booster GENERAL Membership Meeting
May 9, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Christie Forbes-Green, President.
Christie opened the floor for nominations for the booster executive board positions.
Mike Bates was nominated for the position of Sport’s Trustee. Mr. Bates accepted.
Jim Burke was nominated for the position of Service Trustee. Mr. Burk accepted.
Jack Bellomo was nominated for the position of Fine Arts Trustee. Mr. Bellomo accepted.
The nomination chair, Jim Burke, read the names of the individuals who were nominated for each executive board position: President-Don Hornberger, Vice President-Doug Sayles, Secretary-Sue Jacobs, Treasurer-Grace Caporuscio, Service Organization Trustee-Jim Burke, Fine Arts Trustee-Jack Bellomo and Sport’s Trustee-Mike Bates.
Jim announced that the nominations were closed.
Minutes of last General Membership Meeting were read by the general membership and approved by Cheryl Barden (1) and Lisa Jo Kuhns (2).

Administration Report:
Mr. Heethius reported to the general membership on the QAR review for Dakota High School. A power-point presentation was made to the general membership highlighting the criteria the North Central Association looks for during the audit. Schools must meet basic criteria for seven quality standards.
The QAR team rated Dakota High School operational in all seven categories. The review teach interviewed all the different sectors of the stakeholders including, support staff, teachers, parents, students, etc.
The QAR team noted that required action needs to be taken as follows:
Develop a structured systematic approach to maximize the effective use of data to form instructional decisions.
Follow-up on 9th grade students.
Develop clear and consistent guidelines for student expectations.
Engage all stakeholders in meaningful two-way communication. All stakeholders need to become part of the decision making process.
Overall rating: 3.5 Operational
Dakota High School is fully accredited.
Mr. Briningstool requested parents to brainstorm ideas on how Dakota can improve the two-way communication.
Senior Honor’s Night will be held on Thursday, may 26, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The program will run in duration for approximately 2-1/2 hours. The administration and teachers want to recognize all the outstanding student achievements of the class of 2011. There are 22 Suma Cum Lauds that will be recognized that evening.
Seniors who have received scholarships should get the information to Lore Foster so it can be published in the honor’s night program.
Mr. Fusco thanked the booster organization for presenting a positive image to all the visiting schools during the sport’s games and meets. He thanked the executive board for their hard work all year in keeping a positive image for Dakota.
Monday August 22, 2011 will be the first soccer game against Eisenhower for the fall season. The first football game for the fall season will be hosted in Muskegon on August 25, 2011. On September 9, 2011 Dakota will play against Chippewa Valley High School.
Mr. Heethius announced to the general membership that Dakota would again participate in the fundraiser “Drive One for Your School” sponsored by Crest Mercury Lincoln. Come out and participate to earn money for your group/activity/club/team. Volunteers must identify which group they represent to earn fundraising dollars.
On June 3, 2011 students will need to fulfill all 22 credits for graduation will be identified. Students will be offered credit recovery classes.
Mr. Heethius thanked the booster organization for their continued support.
Student Report:
Relay for Life on May 21 and 22, 2011 needs parent chaperones for the over-night stay.
Powder Puff football game is scheduled for May 19, 2011.
Early dismissal for prom needs to be requested this week from parents.
All senior outstanding student fees must be paid before the cap and gown distribution on June 9, 2011.
Testing Out registration begins at counseling department on May 13.

Girls’ basketball $1,269.74. Credits have been earned.
Winter guard $680.00. They are continuing to earn the necessary credits.
Service Report: Kim Zuchora
SADD has worked hard with staff and students to produce and underage anti-drinking video. The video will be shown during the prom and graduation seasons to help promote positive change in student behaviors.
MSSO will be competing in the Social Studies Olympiad next week.
Key Club is selling Hope for Japan bracelets. All proceeds will go to the relief efforts in Japan. The Key Club will participate in the Relay for Life.
NHS is planning a school-wide clean up on May 21, 2011. NHS members are participating in the Relay for Life.
Sports Report: Don Hornberger
Girls’ softball is 1-4 in their division and 11-7 overall. They are playing in Marine City tonight. May 11 they play Anchor Bay at Dakota.
Girls’ varsity soccer 4-2 in their division and 5-6-1 overall. Girls’ JV soccer tied Lake Shore last Friday with a 1-1 score. Jackie Beauregard scored the lone goal for the Lady Cougars, while Alex Sivec, Katie Jarview, and Katie Hartel made some outstanding plays. The varsity and junior varsity teams are hosting Port Huron tonight. May 12 both teams play Cousino.
Girls’ tennis is 4-1in their division and 7-1 overall. The girls competed in the Romeo tournament Saturday and were defeated. Katie Carion came in 2nd place in her flight. The girls are played at Algonac today.
Girls’ track has a 3-1 record. The girls and boys track teams have a home meet May 10 against Port Huron.
Boys’ track has a 3-1 record.
Boys’ golf has a 3-2 record in the MAC white. They will be playing against St. Clair tomorrow. Congratulations to the boys for being the 2011 Macomb County Invitational Champs.
Boys’ baseball has a 13-7 overall record. The boys’ 5-game winning streak started when they crushed Chippewa Valley High School 13-4. Tonight’s game is at Stevenson. On May 11 Dakota vs. Eisenhower away.
Don thanked all the parent volunteers for working the concessions throughout the football and basketball season.
Fine Arts Report: Doug Sayles
Band:
Members of the Dakota Band went on a “Masters of Music” trip to Chicago last month. Highlights included: Master clinics at the Chicago Symphony Hall, attending a performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Hubbard Street Dance, a performance at the Chicago Symphony Hall, dinner and banquet aboard the Spirit of Chicago, and a tour of local attractions.
The Wind Ensemble earned 1st division rating at State Festival.
Dakota band’s spring concert will be Tuesday, May 17 in the Dakota auditorium.
The band banquet will be held on June 3, 2011 at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club.
Try outs, rehearsals and preparations are underway for the fall 2011 marching band season.

Choir:
On Tuesday, May 3, 2011 the choirs participated in the State Choral Festival. Concert and freshman choir received “good” ratings, earning red medals. The varsity choir received an “excellent” rating and earned blue medals.
The choir spring concert will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

A new craft show chairperson, Bridgette Deel was introduced to the general membership. We have received 45 applications for the 2011 fall craft show.

Mary Ann Forster addressed the general membership and the executive board. After serving 13 years on the booster executive board she said good-bye and offered her continued support to the current executive board. Several of the parents and board members thanked Mary Ann for volunteering her time and energy to the Dakota High School booster organization.
Old Business:
Christie Forbes-Green reported to the general membership on the proposed by-law changes brought forward by Cheryl Barden and Donna Kirchhoff.
Section X currently reads: FUNDING REQUESTS WHICH WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED: In no event shall funds be allocated for the following:
Any camps, instructors, coaches, guest speakers or related expenses.
Items that are either essential or mandatory in order for a student to participate in a school sanctioned activity.
Food for practices and/or team and club receptions.
Bus transportation.
The proposed by-law change for Section X: Funding requests must follow the Chippewa Valley Schools financial rules and regulations for purchases.
This by-law change will eliminate the restrictive requirements for funds requested through the booster organization.
The proposed by-law change for Section IX: SECTION IX: REQUEST FOR DONATIONS:
Adult volunteers representing athletic teams, curricular, extra-curricular clubs and groups, academic classes and administration can earn a specific dollar amount for each unit of time worked (also referred to as “credit”) at a Dakota High School Booster fundraising event.
The dollar amount and unit of volunteer time will be set by the executive board members at their August Executive Board meeting and announced to the general membership. A recalculation of this dollar amount per unit of volunteer time (also referred to as “credit”) may be made at the February Executive Board meeting and reported at the next scheduled General Membership meeting.
Monies will be dispersed to qualified athletic teams, curricular, and extra-curricular clubs and groups, academic classes and administration up to five times per year as determined by the majority of the Executive Board members.
Program includes: Volunteers would receive a unit value as payment for concession support. The unit value will be determined by the Booster Executive Board. The unit value will be calculated based on a forecasted total receipts less (1) Booster expenses, (2) 10-15% to support Special Activities, (3) Fluctuation percentage, then dividing the subtotal by the concession stand opportunities.
Identifying the specific number of credits necessary to manage
concession stands for the
various fundraising opportunities.
ie: each unit = 2 ½ to 3 hour
Units (credits) will be distributed based on the current sign-in
process for concession stands, such as
volunteers would
represent a sports club, academic club, etc.
Units would accumulate and be paid by check up to five
distribution pay periods
(i.e. October 15, December 1,
January 15, March 15, April 15 and the close of business in June)
The only groups/activities that would receive monies on a donated
basis annually are:

Christie Forbes-Green formally thanked all the members of the subcommittee, Cheryl Barden, Cathy Impemba, Karen Zerilli, Lori LaBudde and Tom Inger, for their hard work and diligence in working on formulating a fair and equitable proposal.
Ballots were distributed to the general membership whom has voting rights. Ballots were tallied and the by-law changes to Section IX and Section X of the Dakota High School Boosters were unanimously approved.
Thirty ballots were tallied for the vote on the executive board positions. All candidates ran unopposed and were elected to their positions. The 2011-2012 executive board is as follows:

New Business:
Mr. Briningstool wanted to alert parents to a change in the Cougar Day dates for students. Cougar Days will be held on Monday, August 22, Tuesday, August 23 and Wednesday, August 24. There will be no formal Cougar Day on August 25.
